Since July of 2010, 500 Startups have invested in over 900 startups to help accelerate and grow their businesses from the early stages. As one of the partners of 500 Startups, Edith Yeung has worked with so many different entrepreneurs and startup businesses and was able to share with me some of the common challenges she sees entrepreneurs face and tips on what it takes to survive.

For most people, the word entrepreneur is so foreign. If you were to look up the definition online it says: “a person who organizes and operates a business or businesses, taking a greater than normal financial risks in order to do so”. While this might just be skimming the surface of who an entrepreneur really is, there is so much more that makes an entrepreneur.

We all know that one of the most important attributes to being a successful entrepreneur knows how to hustle. So, I asked Edith how she defined hustle and what it means to her as an entrepreneur.

Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty,” Edith says. She explains that in order to fully understand your product and what it stands for, you need to understand what your consumers are looking for. Whether that means going door to door to reach out for their feedback or sending out surveys, you need to know why they would want your product.

In addition Edith shares that passion and drive  are so important to be a successful entrepreneur. The simplest ideas, some of which don’t really make sense, can be the most successful because of the passion, drive and conviction that shines through from the entrepreneur.
